Return to Carolina

With the addition of new member Jack Stanford we ended up with five members at CMP. Unfortunately a rod decided to make a break for freedom from Jim Smith's engine on the second lap of Saturday's qualifying, which:

a. oiled the track down

b. caught the back of Jim's car on fire

c. ended that session prematurely while the emergency crews attended to the #8 Monte Carlo plus it's driver

Jim is okay other than some singed facial hair (remember to put your visor down!) and plans to get everything back together before long, but obviously our numbers were reduced by one at that point. While Jim's one hot (pun intended) lap would have placed him third overall of the 14 entries in the run group, all the V8RRS by PitBoxes.com members left running were in the "GTA by Coolshirt" class.

Here's the starting order for Race #1:

. 1st GTA (1st OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto Works / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.40.645

. 2nd GTA (2nd OA) - Jack Stanford, Gran Turismo East Chevrolet SS; 1.43.854

. 1st SPO (3rd OA) - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo; 1.45.275

. 3rd GTA (4th OA) - Chase Burrow, Overbagh Racing Monte Carlo; 1.46.519

. 4th GTA (5th OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.48.196

In Saturday afternoon's 14-lap race Jared & Jack ran nose-to-tail while Randy and Chase matched lap times as well, then Chase had engine problems and retired on lap 5. I haven't talked to Jared, but there's speculation his mistook a standing white flag at S/F (for a slow car) on lap 10 for the last lap indicator and slowed after the next lap. Jack was able to get by during the confusion and ended up 15 seconds ahead at the finish.

The final order of Race #1:

. 1st GTA (1st OA) - Jack Stanford, Gran Turismo East Chevrolet SS; 1.37.092

. 2nd GTA (2nd OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto Works / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.37.327

. 3rd GTA (3rd OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.40.767

. 4th GTA (9th OA) - Chase Burrow, Overbagh Racing Monte Carlo; 1.42.283

. DNS - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo; no time (blown engine)

The Overbagh team was done for the weekend, so only three V8RRS by PitBoxes.com drivers ran Sunday morning's qualifying session. The order by that afternoon's race was:

. 1st GTA (1st OA) - Jack Stanford, Gran Turismo East Chevrolet SS; 1.37.820

. 2nd GTA (2nd OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto Works / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.38.842

. 3rd GTA (3rd OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.39.828

. DNS - Chase Burrow, Overbagh Racing Monte Carlo; no time (engine issues)

. DNS - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo; no time (blown engine)

Sunday's race for the win was the reverse of Saturday's with Jack holding a slim lead over Jared until halfway thru the race, then Jared got by and cruised to a 15 second win. In the meantime Randy was engaged in a heated battle with long-time GTA competitor Bill Porter, but likewise pulled away in the closing laps for third place.

At the checkers:

. 1st GTA (1st OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto Works / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.37.538

. 2nd GTA (2nd OA) - Jack Stanford, Gran Turismo East Chevrolet SS; 1.37.874

. 3rd GTA (3rd OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.39.128

. DNS - Chase Burrow, Overbagh Racing Monte Carlo; no time (engine issues)

. DNS - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo; no time (blown engine)

See y'all at the track...
