Hot Weekend at Roebling Road - June 25,26

Six V8RRS racers ended up making the show, but Paige Monette Alexander's MRG Corvette dropped a valve on the test day so they did not race. She needed to “turn a wheel” to qualify for the Runoffs, so they worked it out to where they’d stage the car in pit road just short of S/F, the crew would push her and then release the car so she could cross the timing line “unaided”, then she’d turn right into the paddock area. To be sure they did the same thing for Saturday’s race, but the plan worked to perfection and Paige is now eligible to run Indy.

Jim Smith’s Budweiser Monte Carlo suddenly quit when he was idling in Staging, so he didn’t even get on track for Q.1. Otherwise here’s the grid:

. 1st GTA (1st OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.15.569

. 2nd GTA (2nd OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.16.054

. 1st T1 (8th OA) - Chip Bozeman, MJW Consolidated Mustang; 1.19.470

. 3rd GTA (10th OA) - Steve Magowen, University Volvo Camaro; 1.19.756

. 1st SPO (19th OA) - Paige Alexander, OpTech Corvette; blown engine

. 2nd SPO (20th OA) - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo; fuel pump

Ends up Jim Smith was not able to fix his problems, so they are done for the weekend as well. What promised to be a good battle for the GTA win dissolved when Randy went off at T5 on the second lap and fell to the back of the pack, then just as he was catching Steve to battle for second in the class Steve slid off in T2! With a few laps to go Chip was catching the T1 leader (not a V8RRS member), but then their positions stabilized. At the checkers:

. 1st GTA (2nd OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.15.801

. 2nd GTA (4th OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.17.773

. 1st T1 (7th OA) - Chip Bozeman, MJW Consolidated Mustang; 1.20.394

. 3rd GTA (11th OA) - Steve Magowen, University Volvo Camaro; 1.18.291

. DNS - Paige Alexander, OpTech Corvette (engine)

. DNS - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo (fuel pump?)

On Sunday morning we hooked Jim’s fuel pressure gauge up to my street Camaro and it also read 0 psi (while the engine was running!), so it ends up they spent Saturday chasing a dead end. They still don’t know what the issue is, but apparently it’s not a fuel pump.

Randy made a number of changes to his car Saturday night and turned a 1.14.973 to move ahead of Jared on the grid. Jared also went out on a sticker set of McCreary tires to see how they worked but decided they are NOT the best tire for Roebling Road. Everyone else stood pat with they best lap from Saturday, so the grid for Sunday’s 23-lap race was:

. 1st GTA (2nd OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.14.973

. 2nd GTA (3rd OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.15.569

. 3rd GTA (5th OA) - Steve Magowen, University Volvo Camaro; 1.18.291

. 1st T1 (8th OA) - Chip Bozeman, MJW Consolidated Mustang; 1.19.470

. DNS - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo (who knows?)

. DNS - Paige Alexander, OpTech Corvette (engine)

At the green Randy took advantage of his outside pole position to lead Jared into Turn 1 and maintained that for two laps. Jared got by under braking for Turn 1 (the only real passing zone at RRR unless the leading car makes a mistake) on lap three, but Randy kept within a couple of seconds as the race progressed. About lap 15 the pair encountered three cars running side-by-side down the front straight and Jared got by before the track narrows down, so at the checkers the margin has expanded to just under ten seconds. Steve was running fifth overall but came in on the last lap due to a fuel pick-up problem. Chip kept pace with the T1 leader, but faded late as the tires went off and the track got slicker. At the checkers the order was:

. 1st GTA (2nd OA) - Jared Hincher, Matrix Auto / Morgan Lumber Camaro; 1.16.232

. 2nd GTA (3rd OA) - Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro; 1.17.149

. 3rd GTA (8th OA) - Steve Magowen, University Volvo Camaro; 1.20.105

. 1st T1 (9th OA) - Chip Bozeman, MJW Consolidated Mustang; 1.22.590

. DNS - Jim Smith, Budweiser Monte Carlo (who knows?)

. DNS - Paige Alexander, OpTech Corvette (engine)
