2021 Season Opens at Sebring!

The weather forecast looked pretty iffy for the Feb 13-14 Central Florida Region SCCA weekend at Sebring. Friday looked pretty good early on but rain was predicted for both Saturday and Sunday. Those predictions ended up being wrong, however, and all three days were warm and dry (but windy) during the day.

We had five V8RRS drivers signed up, but both Jay Gomer (broken driveshaft) and Danny Lowry (ignition) had issues on Friday and did not run the rest of the weekend. Two new drivers (Jeff Barr in a very clean GT2/TA2 Camaro and Bobby Mills in an equally nice Xfinity Camaro) are potential new members, so I’ll include them in this report until they let me know they’re NOT interested in joining us.

All but Chip Bozeman (who had never run the full course at Sebring) ran the test day, then the schedule called for a 20-minute practice session Saturday morning followed by a qualifying session in the afternoon. Both races would be run on Sunday.

At the end of the 20-minute qualifying session Saturday afternoon the field was:

. 1st GTA* (5th OA) – Michael Munley, Gutterman Services Monte Carlo, 2.20.236

. 1st GT2 (6th OA) – Jeff Barr, BPR Camaro, 2.20.739

. 2nd GTA* (7th OA) – Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro, 2.20.761

. 1st GTSC (8th OA) – Bobby Mills, Xfinity Camaro, 2.21.096

. 1st T1 (20th OA) – Chip Bozeman, Pearl Collision Mustang, 2.33.799

. 2nd GT2 (DNS) – Danny Lowry, PitBozes.com Mustang, no time (ignition)

. 3rd GTA* (DNS) – Jay Gomer, Restorative Solutions Monte Carlo, no time (driveshaft)

(BTW – “GTA*” is short for “GTA By Coolshirt Systems”. They are partners in promoting the V8RRS by PitBoxes.com class but putting all that on the results line makes it too long! <g>)

When we arrived at the track Sunday morning I found out that Jeff had packed up and returned to Naples. Apparently the brakes on his new car were “inconsistent” and given their previous car had met its demise when the brakes failed going into the Hairpin, he/they decided discretion was the better part of valor. Everyone behind him moved up a spot, and the close competition promised by the qualifying times came to pass. Michael, Randy, and Bobby ran nose-to-tail with multiple position changes pretty much the entire 20 minutes, but at the checkers the 2020 V8RRS GTA* Champion (and 2020 V8RRS Rookie of the Year) prevailed.

The final results in Race #1:

. 1st GTA* (2nd OA) – Michael Munley, Gutterman Services Monte Carlo, 2.20.132

. 1st GTSC (3rd OA) – Bobby Mills, Xfinity Camaro, 2.19.542

. 2nd GTA* (4th OA) – Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro, 2.20.332

. 1st T1 (13th OA) – Chip Bozeman, Pearl Collision Mustang, 2.31.447

. DNS (GT2) – Jeff Barr, BPR Camaro, no time (brakes)

. DNS (GT2) – Danny Lowry, PitBozes.com Mustang, no time (ignition)

. DNS (GTA*) – Jay Gomer, Restorative Solutions Monte Carlo, no time (driveshaft)

The 30-minute feature race was just as exciting. Going from memory, Bobby led into Turn 1 followed by Randy & Michael, then Randy got by somewhere on the back side until Bobby powered back by on Sebring’s long back straight. Bobby then appeared to lose power exiting the Safety Pin (Turn 7) which caused Randy to check up while Michael got by both of them. Bobby dropped back and came down pit road at the end of lap 2 with Michael maintaining less than a second between himself and Randy, then on lap five Michael slowed with what ended up being an alternator issue which moved Randy up a spot. At that point I was telling Randy on the radio to put it on cruise but quickly realized he didn’t HAVE a radio! <g> Chip kept cranking out consistent laps and at the finish was the first car one lap down.

At the checkers the order was:

. 1st GTA* (2nd OA) – Randy Walker, Walker Properties Camaro, 2.19.316

. 1st T1 (7th OA) – Chip Bozeman, Pearl Collision Mustang, 2.31.381

. 2nd GTA* (21st OA) – Michael Munley, Gutterman Services Monte Carlo, 2.18.343

. 1st GTSC (22nd OA) – Bobby Mills, Xfinity Camaro, 2.24.485

. DNS (GT2) – Jeff Barr, BPR Camaro, no time (brakes)

. DNS (GT2) – Danny Lowry, PitBozes.com Mustang, no time (ignition)

. DNS (GTA*) – Jay Gomer, Restorative Solutions Monte Carlo, no time (driveshaft)

Next event on the 2021 V8 Road Racing Series Presented by PitBoxes.com schedule is March 27,28 at Carolina Motorsports Park. That event will be co-hosted by the North & South Carolina Regions SCCA.

See y’all at the track…
